Soins

Little scratches

A horse is not a car to be used and then put away, without any state of mind. He is a living being who requires an important care.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF A SORE ?

Sores, even the mildest ones, need immediate care.

• Cut the hair around the sore in order to avoid infections

• Give the sore a shower.

• Put some Betadine soap on it and rinse thoroughly.

• Dry the sore with a clean cloth.

• If the sore is on a joint, soak a bandage of gauze with Betadine solution. You must let the sore dry. Then, apply some heavy cream, as Mytosil, by massaging. The aim is to moisturize the sore in order to avoid the scab to come apart, as this would increase the healing time and make the sore more painful.

• If the sore is located on flesh areas, just spray an aerosol antiseptic.

• Be very careful when applying a treatment product on a sore located near mucous membranes or eyes.

HOW TO GO ON WORKING WITH A HORSE SUFFERING OF A SORE UNDER THE BOOTS ?

The horse can go on working only if he is not lame because of the wound. Nevertheless, it is also necessary to protect the sore against frictions with boot and impurities.

A. Before training, cover the sore with a greasy and heavy cream, as white Vaseline or Mytosil or other greasy substances. Then place a plain gauze bandage on the sore.

• Wrap all with a Velpo bandage (not more than two rounds), without holding too tight, then fix it with a Bandaid.

• In the end, place the boot correctly.

B. After training, give the wounded area a shower, then clean it by a shampoo with Vetedine soap.

• If the sore is under the pastern joint, apply a healing cream until full penetration. Place then gauze soaked in the same cream on the wound, and cover it with a Velpo bandage (2 rounds) and Elastoplast (1 round). Leave this bandage on all night long and take it away the following morning. In this way, the sore is protected against litter impurities and left in the open air during the day, which will speed the healing up.

• If the sore is over the pastern joint, care will be exactly the same, the only difference is that it is not necessary to apply a bandage for the night, as the wound is located in an higher area.
