Remove the hair and trim the tail

Hair removing is one of the less pleasant steps of grooming for the horse. But a perfectly groomed animal will barely stand a ruffled tail. It is also a trick that will spare you...

6 POINTS TO REMOVE HAIR PROPERLY

1. Tear out by hand the hair from each side of the dock, drawing a layered cut. The removal will have to be larger at the dock (about 1 cm) and then will reduce when going down.

2. Take care to remove the hair underneath, but definitely not over the tail.

3. The hair removal will create a « V » whose end matches with the buttock point. As a reference point, trace a horizontal line with your two index fingers.

4. Once the hair torn, give, if necessary, a little razor cut.

5. Disinfect and thoroughly apply a moisturizing cream, as Nivea cream. If you have an antiseptic dermatological cream, it will develop a double role.

6. Don't get upset if some blood stains fall while you remove hair. The dock, as all extremities, is an area which easily bleeds.

 TRICKS

• According to fashion criteria, the good length will be at two thirds of the cannon. Actually, it is only a matter of taste, as long as your horse tail is thick enough. As regards to the one which is limited to a little sad hair, it is better to shorten it. It will get a little volume and lose its frayed look.

• Calculate a two-hand width from the fetlock to fix the proper length. Then, stand up and cut with your scissors slightly slanting, so that the longest point corresponds to the external hair.

TO DO

• To sort out the hair and give the tail its final fold, roll it for an hour max. in a slightly wet polo wrap, as if you were placing a tail guard. To avoid serious injuries :
• Take care that the bandage is not too tight.
• Use a polo wrap and definitely no exercise bandages (just in case you forgot it).
• Remember to take it away within an hour.
